Typing Lessons
Learn touch typing from scratch — or sharpen the skills you already have. TypeForges lessons take you from home row basics to full keyboard fluency, one key at a time.
How Lessons Work
Follow the path
Lessons are arranged in a progressive sequence — each one builds on the last. Start with the home row and work outward, finger by finger. Locked lessons unlock automatically once you complete the one before.
Type, get feedback, improve
Each lesson shows you a target text, highlights the current key on an on-screen keyboard, and tells you which finger to use. Correct keystrokes turn green; errors turn red. Focus on accuracy first — speed follows naturally.
Earn stars, replay anytime
Every lesson awards 1–5 stars based on your combined speed and accuracy. Not happy with your score? Replay any lesson as many times as you like — there's no penalty for retrying, and improvement is always tracked.

Your Beginner Roadmap
Home Row Foundations
Master the 8 home row keys (A S D F / J K L ;). These are the keys your fingers rest on and return to between every keystroke. Every other key is learned relative to this position. Expect 15–25 WPM while you build the habit — this is normal.
Expanding Your Reach
Add the top row (Q W E R T / Y U I O P) and bottom row (Z X C V B / N M , . /). Your fingers are now covering the full alphabet. Speed will feel slow as you learn new stretches — stay patient and resist looking at the keyboard.
Building Fluency
The keys you've learned start feeling automatic. You'll find yourself typing common words without consciously thinking about each letter. Your WPM will creep back up toward — and then past — your old hunt-and-peck speed. Aim for 35–50 WPM by the end of this phase.
Numbers, Symbols, and Speed
Add numbers, punctuation, and special characters. Start using TypeForges Speed Tests and Weak Key Drills alongside your lessons to push WPM higher. Most adult learners reach 60–70 WPM with consistent daily practice by the 3–6 month mark.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Lessons
Don't look at the keyboard
This is the single most important rule. Every glance reinforces the habit you're trying to break. Cover your hands if you have to.
Practice daily, not in long binges
15–20 minutes every day beats two hours once a week. Muscle memory builds through repetition over time, not intensity.
Accuracy before speed
Typing fast but sloppily builds bad habits. Focus on hitting every key correctly — speed will follow as accuracy becomes automatic.
Replay lessons until you earn 4–5 stars
Don't rush to the next lesson if you're struggling. A solid foundation on each lesson makes the next one easier.
Use the Weak Key Drills alongside lessons
As you progress, some keys will lag behind others. TypeForges' Weak Key mode identifies them and targets them with custom drills — use it after every few lessons.
How Long Will It Take?
Timelines assume 15–20 minutes of daily practice. Results vary based on starting skill level and consistency.
