Typing Speed Test

Measure your WPM in a clean, distraction-free environment. Choose your test length, track your accuracy, and watch your progress build over time.

How This Test Works

1. Choose your format

Pick Time mode (15s/30s/60s/120s), Word count mode, or Quote mode. Time mode is best for consistent day-to-day tracking; Quote mode gives you natural sentence flow.

2. Type naturally

Type the displayed text as accurately as you can. The text blurs until you start typing, keeping you focused on your own pace rather than reading ahead.

3. Review your results

See your WPM, raw WPM, accuracy, and consistency score the moment you finish. Every test is saved to your Stats dashboard so you can track progress over time.

Understanding Your Results

WPM (Words Per Minute)

Your typing speed, calculated as (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. This is the standard measure used across the typing world.

Raw WPM

Your speed counting every keystroke, including errors. Shows your raw finger speed before accuracy is factored in.

Adjusted WPM (Net WPM)

Your WPM after a penalty for uncorrected errors. This is the more meaningful number — it reflects real-world typing usefulness, not just raw speed.

Accuracy

The percentage of characters typed correctly. Aim for 95%+ for meaningful practice; below 90% suggests you should slow down.

Consistency

How steady your typing speed was throughout the test, rather than a single burst followed by a slowdown. High consistency indicates reliable, sustainable speed rather than a lucky sprint.

What's a Good WPM Score?

WPM RangeLevel
Under 30 WPMBeginner
30–50 WPMAverage
50–70 WPMAbove average
70–90 WPMProficient
90–120 WPMAdvanced
120+ WPMExpert / competitive

The average office worker types around 40 WPM. Professional typists and transcriptionists typically reach 70–90 WPM.

Tips for Getting an Accurate Score

Don't chase your best score every time. A single sprint doesn't reflect your real typing ability. Take tests regularly and look at your average, not your peak.

Use 60-second tests for a realistic baseline. Shorter tests (15s) can be skewed by a strong or weak start. Longer tests (60s-2min) give a more sustainable, realistic measure.

Test at the same time of day for comparisons. Typing speed can vary with fatigue, time of day, and how warmed up your hands are. For tracking progress, consistency in testing conditions helps.

Watch your accuracy alongside WPM. A high WPM with low accuracy isn't actually faster in practice — check both numbers together, not WPM in isolation.

Don't overthink individual words. Trust your fingers. Hesitating to think about spelling or word choice slows your natural rhythm more than the actual typing does.
